Located in Churu district
near Chhaper village, it covers an area of 7.19 sq km. It is a unique ecosystem consisting a flat
saline depression. It is famous for its population of Black Bucks. It is a place
of tourists' attraction because, in such a small area and in the serene
surroundings of the sanctuary, around 1500-1600 of
these graceful animals can be seen, prancing and in playful mood, from very
close quarters.
In 1920, the Maharaja of Bikaner, Sri Ganga Singh ji had
brought a few Black bucks from Hanumangarh and Suratgarh and released in this
area. Due to the proper care and protection provided to them, their number
increased continuously till Independence. But after Independence, due to
indiscriminate killing of the Black bucks, their number dwindled rapidly
and in 1962 when the area came under the control of the State Government, there
were only 250 or so Black bucks left in the area. On 19th September,1962, the
area was declared as a 'Reserved' area with complete ban on hunting. With the
result the population of Black buck again started increasing. It was notified
a sanctuary in 1971.
Dugolao and Bhansolao are the two old Ponds in the sanctuary.
The area gets inundated even with the little rains and a soft grass Cyprus
Rotendus (Mothia) comes up. This is a favourite food of the Black bucks. The
Lana is also found in abundance here because the land is saline. The female
Black bucks give birth to their young ones in these bushes.
Talchhapar is famous for birds also. Large number of
migratory birds start arriving in September and stay here till March. These are
mainly the Demoiselle Cranes, Bar headed Geese, Spotted Eagle, Tawny Eagle,
Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Kestrel and Sikra etc.Grey partridges, quails,
peafowls, bee eaters, blue jays and larks are other commonly seen birds. Cobra,
Monitor lizard and Spiny tailed lizards are also seen here.
