MT. ABU. W.L.S. Mount Abu is a unique ecosystem with the
presence of various rare, endangered and endemic flora and fauna. It was
declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1960 under Rajasthan Wild Animal & Bird
Protection Act, 1951. Located in Sirohi district the
sanctuary covers an area of 112.98 sq km.
Mt. Abu has a very rich floral biodiversity consisting of
around 830 species. The sanctuary is dominated by sub-tropical evergreen forest
known for its cool refreshing air, fully charged with fragrance of wild roses
and jasmine. Some endemic, rare and threatened plants viz. Dicliptera abuensis,
Strobillanthes callosus and Hydrilla polysperma are found here. Some endangered
species listed in the I.U.C.N.'s Red Data Book viz Begonia tricocarpa,
Indigofera constrata and Crotalaria filipes also exist here. Mt. Abu is the only
place in the state where a variety of Orchids are found. Some rare species of
wild roses and ferns have also been reported from here. Bamboos, Mango, Jamun,
Karonda, Phalsa, Khajur and figs are also found in abundance here. The sanctuary
is very rich in herbal medicinal plants and about 81 species of trees, 89
species of shrubs and 17 species of tuberous plants of medicinal importance have
been identified. Malkangani, Safed Musli, Marorphali, Brahmi, Amla, Bahera and
Bhringraj etc. are found in Gurushikhar and Gaumukh areas.
The
past history of Mt. Abu mentions the presence of Lion (
last reported in 1872) and Tiger ( last reported in 1970). But presently, the
Leopard is the main predator and the other animals found here include Sambhar,
Wolf, Hyena, Jackal, Civet, Langur, Jungle cat, Wild boar, Pangolin, Ratel,
Mongoose,Hare and Porcupine etc. The sanctuary is an ideal habitat for Sloth
Bear. Trevor's Tank is the most appropriate place for observing wildlife. By
walking on the Nature trail from Trevor's tank to Mini Lakki lake one can enjoy
the beauti and diversity of the nature.
The sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers. About 250
species of birds are found here, but the specialty of the Abu sanctuary is the
grey jungle fowl. Other commonly found birds are Babblers, Parakeets, Bee
eaters, Bulbuls, Woodpeckers Owlets, Munias, Partridges, Tree Pie, Flycatchers,
Kingfishers, Red Spur fowl and Peacocks etc.
Among reptiles, Python, Cobra, Russel's Viper, Indian Krait,
Monitor Lizard etc. can be seen here. Mt. Abu is not only a
sanctuary but also a fascinating hill station of Rajasthan. The sanctuary is
surrounded by hills and is visited by thousands of visitors each year..Main attractions are Nakki Lake, Sun Set Point and Gurushikhar
(the highest peak of the Aravalli ranges), Gaumukh, Dilwara temple and Achal
Devi temple etc.
