Kumbhalgarh

Kumbhalgarh  is just 90 kms. from Udaipur on Udaipur - Pali - Jodhpur road. This jungle adjoins the historical Kumbhalgarh fort and used to shield the fort form invaders. The sanctuary covers portions of Rajsamand, Udaipur and Pali districts and is 608.57 sq km. in area. The area comprises of hills and valleys and the rocky terrain gives a mystical touch to the sanctuary.

The forests here are of Dry deciduous mixed type having mainly trees like Dhok, Salar, Gurjan, Dhak, Khirni etc. Bamboos are also found in sufficient number. During rainy season, the lush green forests with running streams of crystal clear water soothes the senses of the nature lovers.

Till 1960 Tiger has inhabited the sanctuary. But gradually it has disappeared from the area and now Leopard has replaced him as the main predator. Other wild animals found here include Sloth Bear, Hyena, Wild boar, Sambhar, Jackal, Nilgai, Jungle cat, Hare etc. It is perhaps the only area in whole of India where the highly endangered Wolf is successfully breeding.

The Joba forest block of the sanctuary is the most suitable place for seeing the Wolves. During summer months when water becomes scarce, packs of wolves roaming around water holes is a common sight.

The Four-horned antelope (Chausingha) is another rare specie found here. Though Dr. Salim Ali and S. Dillon Riplay, in their book ' Birds of India and Pakistan', have mentioned Mt. Abu as the northern limit for finding the Grey Jungle Fowl, yet number of these birds can be seen in the sanctuary.

The sanctuary is equally famous for its archaeological value. The Kumbhalgarh Fort situated majestically on a hill in the sanctuary is an invaluable heritage and attracts lots of  tourists. The famous Jain temple of Ranakpur is also situated in the sanctuary.   The sanctuary was notified in 1971 under Rajasthan Wild Animal & Bird Protection Act, 1951.
