IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE - Some ambitious projects
have been initiated by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) to
improve the quality of life of people of this city. While action on
projects within the city areas have resulted in appreciable improvement
of physical environment and revival of the heritage status of the
city, a new project of Jalmahal region is shortly to be commissioned.
It involves multifaceted development of the Man Sagar lake, Jal Mahal
Palace within the lake and the surrounding region towards the north of
the city.
Jal Mahal is a picturesque palace amidst a man made lake, on the way to Amber fort from Jaipur. However,
total disregard and lack of maintenance have deteriorated
the structure of this erstwhile palace.
The Jaipur Municipal Corporation has focused attention
on restoration of Jal Mahal and the lake surrounding it. A
new project has been formulated. As prelude to the Jal Mahal Tourism
Infrastructure Project, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation has decided to
involve of Jaipur in apprecating the natural environment of the
Man Sagar lake. The first step is to orgainse the Birding Fair ( bird
watching events ). It is being held on the main embankment of this lake
every year in November month.
Birding Fair Themes
Each Birding Fair is dedicated to a conservation issue or a species of
conservation concern. Examples of past themes are
Vultures ( www.peregrinefund.org),
Scientific Experiments on Wildlife,
Indian Sarus Crane,
Man Sagar Bird Park,
Wetlands' bio
diversity, Keoladeo
National Park (
www.knpark.org,
www.savingcranes.org ).
The theme is highlighted through a campaign in public and by way of
the publication that reaches thousands of people. Such a theme-based
approach has helped wildlife conservation in the region to a great
extent - political leaders have been made aware of the issues and it
has led to positive conservation actions.

Tourism & Wildlife Society of India (TWSI) is a
non-government organization having rendered yeoman's services to save
the Great
Indian Bustard, worked for conservation of Cranes,
Vultures (www.peregrinefund.org)
and led the campaign to get the river water released to the
Keoladeo National Park
( www.knpark.org,
www.savingcranes.org ),
Bharatpur.
The event
will focus attention of people on the variety of birds at this lake.
Some birds breed here which means they are resident species. Others are
observed in the lake during winter season which means they are
migratory birds. As many as 133 species of birds have identified at this
lake and their checklist has been prepared by the Tourism and wildlife
society of India.
The lake has tremendous potential to be developed as a '
sanctuary ' for birds and recreation of people. Birding fair is
just a beginning. ---- for future details, kindly
